New Delhi: Telecom regulator on Monday rejected the idea of charging differently for different data services by the content. This is a big hit to Facebook’s highly controversial ‘Free Basics’ platform and Airtel’s zero-rated platform ‘Airtel Zero’.
TRAI said, “No service provider shall offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services by content.”
According to TRAI, no t service provider shall enter into a contract with any person or company or whatever that has the effect of discriminatory tariffs for data services being offered or charged to the consumer by content.”
An exemption has been made for emergency services, or at times of public emergency.
